Planting Guide

The two most important factors for ensuring a healthy plant...
• Never bury the trunk with soil or mulch.
• Maintain an even and deep level of moisture!

For Container grown plants:
Carefully remove the container. Place the root system in the hole so the crown (top) of the root system is at ground level. Do not disturb roots unless directed by staff. Fill in with amended soil.

For Balled and burlapped plants:
Leave the burlap on! Situate the root ball in the hole so the crown (top) of the root ball is at ground level. Cut any strings that are wrapped around the root ball after the ball is in the hole. Fill in with amended soil.

Digging the hole and amending the soil:
Dig the depth of the hole the same depth as the root ball you are planting. Dig the width of the hole twice as wide as the root ball you are planting. Amend the soil as recommended below then continue to fill the hole, checking constantly that the top of the root ball remains at ground level.

Clay Soils:
Mix 1/3 shredded fine bark
1/3 processed steer manure
1/3 existing soil

Sandy Or Loam Soils:
Mix 1/3 peat moss or fine bark
1/3 processed steer manure
1/3 existing soil.

Water immediately after planting:
Place a hose at the base of the plant and allow the water to run at a slow trickle until the soil is completely saturated.

Mulching:
If adding a mulch to the planting area make sure to keep the mulch 3 inches away from the trunk of the plant.

PLEASE NOTE:

Watering: This is critical to newly planted trees and shrubs. For the first one to two years it is important to irrigate your new tree or shrub. Follow the watering technique mentioned above or ask our staff for other techniques.

Fertilizing: When following the above planting instructions, we do not recommend commercial fertilizing for the first year after planting. After the first year has passed, you can apply a general purpose fertilizer that has an even mixture (ie. 16-16-16) or a sustained release formula. Please note that water soluble plant food only provides a quick burst of fertilizer to the plant.
